More than one in three tree species is threatened with extinction
November 18, 2024

Deforestation, for intensive agriculture or through over-exploitation of timber, parasites and invasive species, as well as climate change caused by mankind, are among the main threats cited by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). ‘As a key component of many ecosystems, trees are fundamental to life on Earth through their role in carbon, water and nutrient cycles, soil formation and climate regulation,’ the IUCN said.

In turn, the disappearance of tree species poses a major threat to thousands of other plants, fungi and animals that share their ecosystems. It also threatens the life and well-being of humanity, which depends on forests for food, firewood and timber, as well as for medicines, air purification and climate regulation, through the absorption of carbon pollution.
