United Nations Decade on Forests for Sustainable Forest Management
September 11, 2025

An idea that originated in the Congo has gone global: the Decade of Afforestation
and Reforestation.
Meeting in plenary session on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, at its headquarters in New York, as part of its 79th session, the United Nations General Assembly adopted three texts, including a resolution on the establishment of a ‘United Nations Decade on Forests for Sustainable Forest Management (2027-2036)’. This decision follows the proposal made by the Republic of Congo on 11 November 2022 by the Head of State, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, for ‘the establishment of a decade of afforestation that would compel humanity to reverse the current course of destruction of our forests’. The outcome of this proposal, supported by the African Union, is a major diplomatic success for the government.
